The election results of all the Lok Sabha Constituencies have been declared. It has been decided that rulers cannot do whatever they intend with the majority mandate given by the people, by misusing it asmajoritarianism. The sectoral talks and divisive narratives of the united people of the country by Modi and the BJP has been duly dealt with the present mandate. The BJP has not secured the mandate of absolute majority, of course, with the alliance it can form the government. Modi made poll propaganda, the self-declaration of about 400 seats and that was confirmed by its loyal social media under the guise of exit poll opinion.
The results have been narrated by Prof.ChristopheJaffrelot, Political analyst as:
“The Bharatiya Janata Party’s loss of its majority seems to be sufficient. It might well be – but under certain conditions – for a re-democratisation process to reach its logical conclusion.
For 10 years, India has followed a trajectory of de-democratisation that has found expression in the concentration of political and economic power in a few hands: at the top of the state apparatus, a handful of men decided for the rest, at the expense of Parliament and federalism, as well as many other institutions.”
The BJP took religion as a tool for propaganda. It continuously spoke with hatred about a particular a section of the citizens of the country, with the intention of alienating them from the rest. Besides the BJP also created some sort of enmity between the people of various States talking ill of one with the other. The continuous mandate with absolute majority both in 2014 and 2019 elections gave the BJP a perception that it can do anything and people would accept. It is degradation in the understanding of the mandate given by the electorate.
Ruling and opposition sides are two facets of political governance. Both of them must discharge their responsibilities with mutual respect. But the BJP exhibited scant respect for the voice of the opposition and tried to eliminate their presence in the proceedings of the Parliament. During the last tenure, the post of Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha was kept vacant, under the convention that it has to go to opposition parties.
Modi thought, simply by constructing Ram Temple at Ayodhya and by conducting consecration, people could be diverted of poll promises. In this election the BJP could not win even the Faizabad Constituency within which Ram Temple is built. Religious appeal by the BJP did not serve any purpose at the time of election.
The wrong interpretation on reservation with religious flavour in it has also revealed the dubious position of Modi on social justice front. Social and educational backwardness is the major criterion on which reservation rights to the oppressed must be extended.
Apart, respecting for the Constitution of the country veryleastly and violating them whenever opportunities arises became the routine of the ruling BJP outfit. In order to curtail the voice of the opposition it directed the variousinstitutions to act deliberately without collecting sufficient prima facie evidences to proceed against the opposition party leaders.
The BJP ruling dispensation advocates Hindutva and it took monopoly for the patriotism and nationalism. Any one who criticizes Hindutva was considered not a critic of the ideology but an anti-national and unpatriotic to the country.
With all these anti-democratic approach and also contrary to the direction of the apex court of the country, the BJP government filled the vacant posts of the Election Commission of India (ECI). Equal level playing field was not provided to the opposition, during the election periods. The violating areas of the Model Code of Conduct by the BJP were brought to the knowledge of the ECI with due complaints. No effective actions were taken on them by the ECI.
The BJP has not been mandated with absolute majority at present. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) put together has reckoned for the majority. With the support of the alliance parties, the governance has to take place. Certain partners in the NDA like Telugu Desam Party, Janata Dal (United) and Janata Dal (Secular) have got an entirely different ideology in respect of autonomy for the States, enumeration of caste census, protection of rights for minorities. The BJP has got entirely opponents views. The BJP cannot do as it likes, as it did during the past 10 years. In fact it is a fresh regime for the BJP, since it has to get alongwith the support of alliance parties. The democratic nature of representing the views of all the partners is the touch stone for the BJP to start its fresh inning.
Both the ruling and opposition parties have been added sufficient strength with the results of the supportive regional parties. The strength of regional parties have added sizeable strength to the democratic functioning of the forthcoming government. It is the manifestation of the constitutional provision, India is a Union of States. Yes, Indian Union has been formed with the States as its integral constituents.
A noteworthy success among the regional party’s performance in Tamil Nadu i.e. DMK, the present ruler of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu State has got 39 Lok Sabha Constituencies and with Puducherry Union Territory, One, in all these 40 Constituencies the I.N.D.I.A. bloc has sweeped the poll for which the DMK’s efforts and the strategies and direction of its leader M.K. Stalin were the main reasons. In no other State either in BJP alliance or in Congress alliance, the solidarity of the mandate has been provided so either to the ruling side or the opposition. For this foundation was laid by Thanthai Periyar under whose ideals the State has been ideologically nurtured. More than the ruling side, the presence of strong, vigilant opposition is vital for effective democratic polity. Autocratic approach in the democratic governance has been dealt with properly. The electoral mandate has initiated from de-democratisation to re-democratisation. The change has to be watched vigilantly. Eternal vigilance is the price for Liberty.
