The State Government of Tamil Nadu has constituted for the first time in the country a committee to monitor the dispensation of social justice as per the statutory instruction. Tamil Nadu has a pioneering history in respect of social justice to compensate the degradations of caste system and the inadequacy of representation in education, employment and elections during the British rule.
After independence, the Indian Constitution has also made social justice imperative in its Preamble itself. Various provisions are available in the Constitution from its beginning and through the various Amendments brought in it later. The main mode of dispensing social justice is through reservation. Despite the passing of 75 years of independence, social justice remains a long journey. The quantum of reservation statutorily provided to various oppressed sections in the society has not been properly implemented.
The reservation denied level is more than the gap between the cup and the lip. The desired quantum has not reached the cup at all. In nutshell, most of the reservation provisions remain only in paper and not in implementation. This is the state of condition at country level.
The State Government headed by DMK has constituted the State Committee of Monitoring Social Justice. The formation of committee is an eye opener in the annals of social justice.
Chairman Prof. Suba. Veerapandian, the Members – Prof. Dr. Swaminathan Devadoss. Dr. Jaison, Manushya Puththiran, Dr. Rajendran, G. Karunanidhy and Dr. Shanti, appointed are well knowledgeable and experienced and have been associating themselves for the cause of social justice.
The Modern Rationalist wishes the Social Justice Monitoring Committee of Tamil Nadu, Success, by discharging its pioneering responsibilities enabling the formation of similar committees in other States and by the Union government.
