Distortion of history and glorifying the images of the puranic characters, which oppose the brahminical supremacy, are consistently carried out by saffron brigades with the support of the political ruling of BJP at the Centre. Fabrication of historical facts has become routine practices of the historical bodies, the presidium of which has been converted as the monopoly of saffron ideologues.
We would like to pinpoint certain features, despite its mythical nature that the entire dominating exercise is meant to upkeep the brahminical supremacy. Out of the NINE mythical incarnations of Vishnu, the latest Buddha’s fabrication as incarnation will itself reveal the agenda of sanatanic forces which assimilated the rationalist ideals of Buddha who fought against the Vedic rituals which caused social discriminations in the society. Out of the rest EIGHT, only FOUR were human incarnations in which the Rama and Krishna became popular mainly because of their non-brahminical orientation. The other TWO viz. Vamana and Parasurama were brahminical incarnations. Despite the meticulous manipulations, the sanatanic forces could not succeed in popularising these two incarnations. In the case of Vamana, the non-brahmin King Maabali is glorified. No incarnation has so far been designed with the orientation of Vyshyas, Sudras and women – the reason being, all of them originated from the sinful vaginal spot (baba yoni) as per the sermon of Krishna in Bhagavad Gita. What does it convey? The entire mythical design is meant to sustain the caste system, culminated by Varnashra Dharma.
The current move of the RSS is to make popular at least one brahminical incarnation through Vamana Jayanthi by replacing the popular belief of King Maabali. RSS has commenced such an exercise in Kerala. The fundamentals, though mythical are debatable. Birthday (Jayanthi) is applicable only for humans and not so to gods which are projected as having no beginning (birth) and end (death). The Sanskrit term ‘incarnation’ means ‘coming down from heavenly abode’ and not birth. Hence, there cannot be any birthday celebration (Jayanthi) for Rama, Krishna and the presently proposed Vamana, the mythical brahmin boy.
In support of the said fact, the significance of King Maabali, culminated by Mahatma Jotirao Phule in Maharashtra is evidenced through the research document, ‘Cultural Revolt in a Colonial Society – The Non-Brahmin Movement in western India 1873-1930’ by Gail Omwedt:
“The sacred religious literature was re-interpreted to show how the invading Aryans had conquered the indigenous people through force, treachery and use of religious propaganda. The nine avatars of Vishnu were seen as different stages of the Aryan conquest. Matsya (the fish) and Kachha (the tortoise) represented invasion via sea, Varaha (the boar) was so called because the original Aryans were seen as barbarians by the more civilised native Kshatriyas. The story of Nar-Singh (the lion-man) and Prahalad represented conquest by treachery and propaganda where the mind of a local prince was corrupted to the point where he was willing to kill his own father. Finally, Vamana (the brahmin boy) represented a kind of culmination of the Aryan conquest of Maharashtra by cheating the great Bali out of his kingdom. Phule did not, like the Tamil non-Brahmans, use the story of Rama to symbolize conquest of the south by the north, but the approach was the same. The dasyus or non-Aryans and the demons of the vedas and puranas were said to represent the indigenous population, and were depicted as enlightened Kings and warriors, the Aryans and their gods as treacherous invaders.
The culmination was Phule’s emphasis on Bali-Raja, King Bali. This was in a sense his reply to the elite’s use of Ram, Ganpati or Kali; it was a symbol that united Maharastrian peasant masses with the tales of Aryan invasions. Bali, as has been noted was an ancient symbol for the peasant and at the same time represented a sort of golden age, expressed in the Marathi saying “ida pida javo; balica raja yevo” (“let sorrows and unhappiness go, let the kingdom of Bali come.”) Bali’s Kingdom in addition served as a focus around which positive interpretations of other peasant deities of Maharashtra were elaborated. That is, why Phule remained a rationalist, at the same time he had a favourable approach to such peasant and low-caste deities as Khandoba, Jotiba, Martand, Kalbhairav, that contrasts with his hostility to the Sanskritic deities. Khandoba, for instance is derived from the title of the official in charge of each of the nine Khand, or parts, of Bali’s Kingdom; Mahasobo from Mahasubha (great province) and so on.”
The ten incarnations (including the prospective Kalki) are intended to promote the brahminical glorification of Vaishnavaite kings which was in sharp contrast to the denigration of Dravidian rulers. The Dravidian kings were fabricated as incarnation of Vishnu. The mythical stories were designed to suit the cultural invasion of Aryans. The Tamil Pandya’s royal insignia ‘Fish’ and Chalukkya’s ‘Pig’ were assimilated to design the Matcha (Fish) and Koorma (Varaha) incarnations of Vishnu. The history of Dravidian kings was fabricated by the Brahmins as puranas. The Brahmins were also very fond of fabricating such stories according to the wishes of aspirants and made them believe that there had been puranic sanction to whatever they write. Now, under that garb, the RSS tries to glorify the brahminical supremacy by introducing Vamana Jayanthi in Kerala, for which the local BJP pretends as if they distance themselves.
The social revolutionary Periyar E.V.Ramasamy used to propagate that whether it is the projection of history or mythology by sanatans, they always aim to uphold the supremacy of Brahmins. The intention of introducing Vamana Jayanthi by RSS in Kerala is one such move which is against the popular belief of glorifying and celebrating the mythical homecoming of King Maabalai every year.
The original news reporting in ‘The Times of India’ seems to be lopsided revealing only the stand of RSS and BJP. The historical and analytical background of the move must be known to the readers to find out the ill intention of RSS and arrive at rational conclusion.
