Once youth bids farewell, there are three stages following men and women – 1) elderly life 2) old 3) Agedm, each different from the other two. During these three stages, mental disorders that cropup are also three in number – 1) Amnesia 2) Dementia 3) Alzheimer’s.
Doctors all over the world are restlessly striving to cure people of these mental disorders but it is a matter of deep sorrow that sofar remedy and solutions have not been satisfactorily invented. We still have to go a long way. Perhaps, because human mind is a deep ocean of secrets.
Recently, experts in the treatment of mental disorders probed into the most serious – Alzheimer’s disease. They are now trying to revamp the method of diagnosis. They are studying deeply the case of patients with the progressive brain disorder. They are devising a New Rating Scale called “Seven-point rating scale. Cognitive and biological changes in the patient are the basis of this new Rating Scale.
Amnesia and Dementia are the most common type of mental disorders. These are frequently pointed out by politicians to tease one another. When one forgets something that happened in the past, the other ridicules and asks – “Do you suffer from selective amnesia?”
Alzheimer’s got its name from the name of a German doctor Alzheimer who was an expert in the treatment of mental disorders. It is a deadly disease of forgetfulness. Dementia is also called Schizophrenia, that causes chronic insanity. Amneisa is in other words ‘loss of memory’. Alzheimer’s is a terrible disorder that leads to senility in patients.
A conference of Alzheimer’s Association was held in Amsterdam. They have come out with a new 7 point biological rating scale similar to that which is used for cancer diagnosis. It is a numerical staging system. It assesses the progress of the disease. When I visited Singapore recently I happened to read the English Daily – ‘The Straits Times’. I read in it about all these.
Life becomes meaningless when we cannot remember anything. Memory is an invaluable gift of nature. Absent minded people exist as a butt of ridicule. People with a photographic memory are admired and envied. Mental health is as important as our physical health. Hence, memory loss should never be neglected. Consulting experts in the field is better, when it is detected in its early stage. It is a solace that scientists, psychiatrists and eminent doctors are now seriously trying to save mankind from brain disorders.
The old method of identifying mental disorder as mild, moderate and severe have been replaced with the latest 7 Point Rating Scale. Mayo clinic in Rochester (U.S.) of Minnesota District and the National Institute of America are striving hard to invent a cure for all the three mental disorders. Dr. Maria Corrille is prominent among the experts involved in it. Let us optimistically wait for the best remedy.
