“Gurukulam is a traditional educational system where students stay with their masters and learn. I am not against it, but a country can derive benefits, in my opinion, only when there is no caste based discrimination in it. Tamil system of Gurukulam has been adhering to this kind of disparity. As long as this discrimination exists, Gurukulams would be seen only as an unjust system that belittles and denigrates non Brahmins. I am sorry to say that such Gurukulams would function only as the fountain head of degradation. We have seen Brahmins and non Brahmins subjected to partiality in treatment by those Gurukulams. Even while having food, non-brahmins have to maintain distance from Brahmins. I have witnessed it in such Gurukulams. When I protested against this sort of discrimination, V.V.Subramania Iyer stressed that it cannot be avoided in Gurukulams. E.V. Ramasamy Naicker and I, both being non Brahmins. were terribly shocked by the response of V.V.S. Iyer.”
