In the 2021 held elections for the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal the secularist fronts have won. In Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry, the BJP led alliances have won. Contrary to unitariness and the uniformity in all other areas, overall the results have proved the pluralistic nature of the country and that is reflected in the election result also. In Assam, the role of CAA has been large. After the Congress having ruled the Union Territory of Puducherry, and at present under the Lieutenant Governor rule for the past few months, the NR Congress with the alliance of BJP comes to power with political. machinations and manipulations.
In Tamil Nadu after a gap of 10 years, the main Dravidian party viz. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has won the marvelous victory with its democratic progressive alliance. The Secular victories are distinct in different ways.
Tamil Nadu
The State has been under the rule of Dravidian parties alternatively since 1967. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has won this election after the demise of its veteran leader Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi. The media and opposition had viewed the political climate as a turning point, focusing on as if a vacuum is created due to Kalaignar’s demise. This is disproved under the able leadership of the succeeded leader of DMK, M.K. Stalin. For the past 10 years, M.K. Stalin as leader of opposition had functioned more responsibly than the ruling party for the cause of public. His leadership was already proved in 2019 with the distinct victory in the elections held for the Parliament. That victory was viewed with special focus since the result was complete sweep in favour of the secular alliance, except in one constituency. In the present legislative assembly election, DMK having secured the sizable seats as alliance, is able to form ministry with its own strength.
During the past 10 years, DMK has taken up the Dravidian principles of secularism, social justice mobilizing the public and the Reward people have awarded. With his rich experience in various governance layers during the earlier regimes, M.K. Stalin would be in an apt position to commence the rule from day one of assuming office. As the parent organisation, we, Dravidar Kazhagam campaigned throughout the State for DMK led alliance under the banner ‘Dravidam Wins’. As predicted while we were campaigning, the election results have come out despite slight intruding disturbances in a few constituencies.
We wish the DMK president MK. Stalin and his colleagues to bring back the lost Dravidian glory that prevailed in the State and take it to further leap.
Kerala
The Marxist led alliance by Pinarayi Vijayan has won the elections, succeeding his second term. He was one chief minister who ably managed the COVID-19 pandemic (first wave) and at present tackling the second wave too, despite inadequate financial and infrastructural support from the Centre.
He has been a consistent fighter for the rights of the State that made him secure the mandate. Even when the fundamentalist forces in the State started to create a chaos, contrary to the judgment of the Supreme Court in the entry of women (menstruated) into the Sabarimala temple, Com. Vijayan stood solidly for the cause of secularism, dispersing gender justice. In respect of appointment of archakas hailing from all castes in the State controlled temples, the Government took the lead. All these progressive initiatives and actions have brought the electoral victory.
We wish Com. Pinarayi Vijayan for the successful forthcoming regime and the Kerala State witnessing many mile stones in all the fronts more so in social justice.
West Bengal
Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress alliance has secured the mandate for the third term. The opposition that invested more on anti-incumbency factor was unable to reap. Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah visited Bengal 38 times. In spite of the Herculean efforts they met a dismal defeat of not gaining power. The lone, brave tigress who championed for the cause and identity of Bengal during the electioneering works despite health inconveniences has proved her leadership mettle. The brave CM who was not ready to spare even a fringe of the States’ rights and confronted daringly with the Centre is unprecedented. The thumping victory in West Bengal leads the other States to fight for their respective rights. Wishing Mamata ji her successful third tenure!
Let us congratulate the winners and the voters; it is unfortunate that still money power, muscle power and media power are a challenge to real democracy!
