This is a story related to an advertisement that appeared in a news paper. It starts with an introduction that this is an old story. A gentleman has two wives. The first one is a little younger than her husband and the second one rather young. As the years passed by, the husband’s head turned grey. Naturally! The second wife, growing impatient about this, she began the habit of pulling grey hairs from her husband every day. The first wife had a new worry now. If she goes out with her husband, he sporting black hair now, others might take her for his elder sister or even his mother.
Soon she came to a conclusion; she wanted her husband to look equal to her and so decided to remove all his black hairs one by one every day. To solve her problem therefore, she started pulling all his black hairs. She was doing it as if she was cleaning his head. He wanted to oblige both his wives and this process he lost all his hair and became totally bald. There was no white hair nor black and only the totally bald head remained. He had to face such a pathetic plight because he wanted to please everyone and giving chance to all. Therefore do not nod your head to everyone.
The thinker, Osho philosophically concludes, “Be always yourselves; do not tr y to be someone else . Only your The Modern Rationalist July 2016 35 individuality will distinguish you from others. If you forget this you cannot remain a proper member in the society.” A few say that if we copy others it may add dignity to them. But if you deeply reflect, you will realize that this is not a correct idea. It is probable because man descended from monkey he tries to ape others. It is not necessary. Each one’s talent and power are distinct. If we
merge ourselves with others they will appear prominent in you, you will look lost. Each man’s brain contains innumerable powerful cells; inside them there will be always flowing talents and individual ideas. Realizing this, we should try to be ourselves for ever. Even if cloning is made successful original has its own merit and copy remains copy. Therefore let us try to be ourselves. Let our friends realize that we cannot achieve anything by not being ourselves and deceive ourselves. This will cause only loss of many kinds.
