Some hair-brained people have told the parents that a dip in the Ganges would drive away all the cancer cells from his body. The parents reached the river along with an aunt of the boy and some other relatives. The boy was dunked in the waters by the aunt while the parents were praying to their gods. The devotees beside the river bank screamed and shrieked when they watched the horrible dip-but their protests fell on deaf ears. The boy was brought out breathless.
Even after that, the stupid aunt performed certain rituals saying that the boy would come back to life. He had gone for ever. The police personnel rushed to the spot upon complaints by the public. The crazy woman was arrested and the body of the boy was sent to a hospital for post-mortem. Periyar was quite right when he said – “Believe in God – Relieve your sense!”
