On 21st, 22nd and 23rd July, 2023 I was in KualaLumpur, attending an international conference. I flew from Singapore to participate in the event. During this
Malaysian trip, Mr. Bharani, a friend of my son Anburaj, met me. Mrs. Bharani was also present. Mr. Bharani is a senior executive in an IT firm. He gave me the book ‘BRAIN CHAINS’, written by Dr. Theo Compernolle, saying that it is a book
to be chewed and digested.
Dr. Theo is not only a medical practitioner, but also a psycho therapist and mental health consultant for industrialists
and employees in corporate concerns. He excels in Biology, Physiology and Business Management too. He regularly delivers lectures on the topic
– ‘How to offer and teach science in a simple and productive manner’? In his preface to his book Dr. Theo
recalls his mother’s advice which made him what he is today: ‘Do one thing Do your best Finish up and tidy up.’ Dr. Theo deeply researched and found that
human brain is bound by chains that are to be broken for a lovable life. He quotes poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), who said –
“The brian is wider than the sky… The brain is deeper than the sea.” Dr. Theo also cites the words of Albert Einstein
(1897-1955)- “It is not that I am so smart; it is just that I stay longer with problems.”
Our brain plays a vital role in nourishing our reasoning power and rationalistic outlook. What are the chains that bind it? According to
Dr. Theo, sleep disorder is one of the BRAIN CHAINS. He advises us to take a short break everyday among our tasks. Uninterrupted sleep
is to our brain like charging our phones. Peaceful sleep is required not only for IT professionals but for all others too. Dr. Theo says – “Try to have
eight hours of undisturbed sleep if you want to get the best out of your brain. He calls insufficient sleep “SLEEP DEBT”, that we
owe our brain.
“Keeping awake for the whole night cannot be compensated by sleeping during daytime or by sleeping intermittently at odd hours,” says
Dr. Theo, “sleep with a clock-work precision. Sleeplessness is widely known as insomnia. In medical terms I shall call it ‘Sleep Apnea’.”
Dr. Theo advises us to seek medical advice to avoid snoring, sleep disorder and sudden breathlessness. Concealing our biological
problems is hazardous. The great potential of our brain should be discovered and unleashed. We live in a multitasking world leading a hyperconnected
life. Hence delinking our brain from chains is essential. Dear readers, let us discuss other Brain Chains sometime later
