Dr.K.VEERAMANI
Recently Apollo Hospitals in Chennai urgently required lungs for transplant to save the life of a 26 – year old young man, a native of Kerala. He had been on life support device for 72 days. A 19 – year old young man who lived in Pimpri–Chinchwad district of Maharashtra had committed suicide. His family
members came forward to donate his organs in order to save other lives. The lungs were harvested at D.Y.Patil Hospital. Dr. Sanjeev Jadhav of Navi
Mumbai’s Apollo Hospitals was aware of the need in Chennai.
His team left by an ambulance to reach Pune airport and board a flight to Chennai, with the harvested lungs. The ambulance crashed
on to a bridge-wall after hitting a pickup van and a state transport bus in Pune. This was on Monday, 20th November, 2023. The major
road accident left Dr.Sanjeev Jadhav and his associate severely injured but could not prevent them from performing their duty.
They reached the airport somehow with great difficulty at 5 p.m. and boarded a charter flight bound for Chennai. The patient in Chennai Apollo was already
on the operating table and they had only 6 to 8 hours at the most to use the harvested lungs. The lungs reached Apollo Hospitals at 8.30 p.m. and the transplant was successfully completed by 1.30 a.m. on Tuesday, 21st November, 2023. Had the transplant not been done on Monday, the patient would
have passed away. As per media reports the patient was doing well on Tuesday and recuperating.
The family members of the young man thanked Dr.Jadhav gratefully with their eyes dampened by tears. His entire team emerged as true humanists, didn’t they?
Sympathy is a great virtue. Empathy is a greater virtue. During August 2023, an eleven – month old infant from Odisha underwent a successful liver
transplant at MGM Health Care in Chennai. The humanist surgeon was Dr. Karthik Manivannan who performed the difficult transplant. Similarly,
the heart of a two-year old child who died on 18th November, 2023 at a hospital in New Delhi was successfully transplanted into an
8-month-old baby girl at MGM Hospital in Chennai. Apollo Hospitals recently celebrated in New Delhi the 25th Anniversary of their first Paediatric Liver Transplant, performed in 1998. 4300 liver transplants have been done by them so far in India. Hats off to all such true humanists in medical profession! Humans donot live for ever – but humanism does.
