Women officers in the three armed forces – Army, Air Force and the Navy are legally eligible for the grant of permanent commission, but the deserving and eligible women in the Indian Coast Guard have so far not been granted Permanent Commission. A Coast Guard Officer Priyanka Tyagi recently moved the Supreme Court seeking permanent commission to eligible women in the Indian Coast Guard.
The bench comprising the Chief Justice of India D.Y.Chandrachud and two other Justices heard the appeal and sternly warned that the bench would step in if the Union Government continues to stall the grant of permanent commission to women in the Coast Guard. After hearing the arguments from the government, the CJI remarked, “All these functionality etc; arguments do not hold water in the year 2024. Women cannot be left out”. Finally the bench has cautioned using stressful words –
“If you do not do it, we will do it”
The outcome of further hearing is awaited. Meanwhile, we should commend the apex court which observed in favour of “Nari Shakti” (Woman Power). It has advised the Union Government to treat women fairly and prove that they really care for women empowerment.
The bench had further asked – “Why are you being so patriarchal? You do not want to see the face of women in the Coast Guard?
It is said “Action speaks louder than words”. Let us hope the grievance of the women in the Indian Coast Guard would be redressed by the Union Government atleast after the next hearing of the appeal.
