“The hall mark of our nation is that by the spirit of dialogue, democracy and acceptance of view points, we have kept the power of violence subdued by the power of the Constitution.”
When social norms and public accountability erodes policy has no meaning. Though liberalisation helped India to reduce poverty, the nature of the growth has not been all-encompassing – there are not enough jobs, or clean air and water, and zero accountability when execution falters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is suddenly cagey about calling himself an OBC after the Congress party raised the caste issue. He has blurred caste lines and prefers to bracket people into ‘poor’ or ‘under privileged’ categories. Why this hypocrisy? There are 50 per cent OBCs, 15 per cent Scheduled Castes and 12 per cent Tribals (in Maharashtra) yet only 3 of the top 90 IAS Officers in the State are from the backward castes. Even they have marginal postings.
