UNTOUCHABILITY IN THE CORPORATE WORLD-A DRAVIDIAN CLARION CALL!

Historically, Brahmins as a caste occupied and reproduced positions of authority through control of ritual knowledge, education, and institutions rather than through proportional material production, military protection, or labor contribution to the wider population. This enabled long-term governance and influence through cultural and symbolic capital, sustained by endogamy, hereditary access, and institutional continuity. This resembles a scaffolded mobility system, where intergenerational networks hold each rung in place, enabling continued ascent and authority even when direct material or protective contributions are limited.

A recurring methodology for gaining proximity to power involves first identifying personal or situational vulnerabilities of the primary authority holder, then attracting attention through emotionally resonant but non-verifiable practices (such as ritual, prophecy, or symbolic expertise). This proximity enables the actor to embed themselves as a trusted confidant, gradually translating symbolic influence into durable institutional power.

Once proximity to authority is secured, consolidation typically proceeds through a dual strategy: first, the systematic placement of kin and in-group members across adjacent hierarchies of influence; second, the active foreclosure of access for out-groups by restricting education, social legitimacy, occupational mobility, and institutional recognition. Together, these mechanisms ensure durable control while minimizing competitive entry.

These mechanisms enabled rapid and relatively unhindered advancement, resulting in sustained occupancy of governing, advisory, and custodial positions. Over time, this consolidation expanded dependent and subordinate classes under their influence, with material resources, authority, and institutional privileges accruing through proximity to ruling powers rather than through direct productive or protective contribution to the broader population.

Over time, these positions were further consolidated through the formalization of social divisions into legal, religious, and customary codes. Segregation became enforceable, and occupational hierarchies were rigidly assigned, with certain communities relegated to stigmatized menial and scavenging labor. This institutionalized social degradation functioned to stabilize elite dominance by converting inequality into normalized social order.

Until the emergence of the Dravidian rationalist critique led by E.V.Ramasamy (Periyar), the structural mechanisms of Brahminism—rooted in hereditary authority, ritual legitimacy, and institutional exclusion— remained largely unchallenged in Tamil Nadu. Periyar’s analysis systematically exposed the internal contradictions and social costs of this system, disrupting its moral legitimacy and enabling sustained resistance through the Dravidian movement.

Through systematic reform of the education system, the opening of schools and learning spaces to all children, the social and intellectual emancipation of women and girls, and the rationalist reform of religious practices toward equality and dignity, the Dravidian movement led by E.V.Ramasamy (Periyar) catalyzed broad  social, cultural, and political liberation in Tamil society.

These interventions dismantled inherited barriers to knowledge, participation, and self-respect, enabling mass empowerment and democratic mobilization.

In effect, the Tamil people articulated the political equivalent of ‘the emperor has no clothes’— a collective recognition that inherited authority, once stripped of ritual mystique and fear, possessed no moral or rational legitimacy.

As social dominance was challenged, strategic focus shifted from the social sphere to the professional and institutional domain. Through intergenerational support asymmetry, access to higher education—particularly in medicine, engineering, and law—was consolidated.

Competitive public examinations and entry into public services were systematically targeted and saturated. In effect, the erosion of social authority was offset by the accumulation of professional and bureaucratic power, allowing influence to be preserved and reconstituted within state and credential-based institutions.

Contrary to long-held assumptions, individuals from historically suppressed classes began to demonstrate competitive excellence once barriers to education and opportunity were reduced. Their performance increasingly matched or exceeded that of traditionally dominant groups. As competitive parity intensified, sections of the established elite responded by seeking opportunities in external geographies—most notably the United States—where prior social and credential advantages could be re-leveraged in less contested environments.

However, these patterns remain visible in new forms. Within corporate and capitalist structures, the same intergenerational support mechanisms reappear, enabling rapid ascent through networks of capital, recommendation, and gatekeeping. In a system where financial leverage determines authority, capital ownership supplants social hierarchy as the primary axis of power. Consequently, inventors, designers, and skilled contributors— those who create tangible value— are often marginalized, while decision-making authority concentrates among those controlling capital rather than competence.

In contemporary corporate environments, advancement often operates through ostensibly neutral mechanisms such as reporting structures, group discussions, and team-based decision- making. Ideas generated at the team level must pass through hierarchical filters before reaching senior leadership. When intergenerational or network-based support mechanisms are present, certain individuals receive repeated ‘pushes’—visibility, endorsement, and opportunity—that translate into upward mobility. Once elevated, the same networks reinforce the ascent of others below them, reproducing the cycle across rungs.”

“While this process appears procedurally fair, its unseen consequence is the systematic displacement of primary contributors. Individuals responsible for genuine innovation or execution may lose rightful advancement opportunities, leading to disengagement, exit, or dispersion of talent. Over time, this results in organizational value loss masked by formal compliance with process.

Modern capitalism systematically rewards ownership and network position over origination, allowing creators of foundational public goods to be eclipsed by institutional actors who capture downstream value. For example, Vinton Cerf, despite co-inventing TCP/IP (the technical foundation of the Internet), does not hold wealth or corporate power comparable to top corporate leaders or billionaire executives.

The purpose of this article is to encourage every contributor—creator, inventor, designer, professional, or worker—to consciously safeguard their intellectual, economic, and professional value. By understanding how intergenerational support asymmetry and network-driven advantage operate within modern institutions, readers are equipped to identify, question, and disrupt any form of unearned walkover that diminishes genuine contribution. Through reflection on past transactions and missed recognitions, many may recognize where value was extracted without fair return—and take informed steps to prevent its repetition.
